A Closet Full of Clothes With Nothing to Wear

Do you ever get stuck in your closet before class? Got nothing to wear? Let me see if I can help you out... Be mindful that you need to dress appropriate for the class you're taking. You can never go wrong with a classic look, but sometimes it feels good to spice it up without looking like you're trying way too hard... ermmmm ...

BALLET: the seamed pink tights, paired with a burgundy halter-lowback leo, a navy blue opaque skirt, and wispy, side-parted low bun with a faux yellow flower in the back. Match colors that you'd never wear out in everyday clothes. You'd be surprised with what you can pair together.

MODERN: little spandex shorts paired with a tight fitted v-neck shirt. Although it's good to mix it up, for modern type dance, I suggest sticking with neutral and earthy tones such as beige, dark green, brown, and navy.

JAZZ: so for jazz class, think Broadway. High-waisted black cut-off tights over a black leo with either a "flashdanced" style retro shirt or a cute shrug. Be creative but keep it simple. A silhouette is the most important line.

HIP HOP: now here's a genre where people go really wrong. Less is more. Layered colorful tank tops with parachute pants. High-top Converse or Firestone sneaks always give off a funky cool vibe.

Caught My Eye

So some things catch my attention, but this really made me pause, rewind, and replay about 3 times. Alex Wong of Vancouver is formally trained with the Miami City Ballet and is quite possibly the most composed, self-aware dancer I've seen perform in a while. I'm sure classical choreo will come easy to him, but I'm pretty excited to see him try hip-hop or jazz.

Vocab Doesn't Have to Stop in Grade School

One of the most important aspects of teaching is the use of words. Whether it's through analogies or comparisons, dancing remains an art. Art is sparked by a thought that sends your mind elsewhere. What inspires you? Teaching dance isn't just through movement; I'm a big believer in the explanation of choreography. Since dance is a message conveyed without words, words should be used whenever possible throughout the process. Make those odd comparisons and uncomfortable analogies.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

First thing's first

Before anyone seriously considers pursuing the career of dance, there are some factors that have to be mastered. These qualities make the strongest, most intriguing dancer.
Change of direction
Change of weight
Change of level
Change of focus
Use of space

If nothing else, it's all an illusion.
